Okay, call me a nerd, but don't you just love this time of year? You know, you walk into Wal-Mart and there are all the fresh, new school supplies: pencil boxes, backpacks, lunchboxes, pens, folders, 20 cent crayons, kleenex, germ-x, etc. And now that I have two school aged children, I have an excuse to actually buy it! Here is the really nerdy part though: I already have all of my school supplies bought. You see, when the new supply list comes out (usually the end of May), I get a copy, clip out the lists for my girls' grades, place the list in my purse, and then I buy one or two things off of it every week when I go to Wal-Mart. That way, I don't have to dish out a lot of money at once to buy it all. I know what you are thinking, "Gee you really are a nerd", and I guess I am, but for someone who is too practical to do much shopping otherwise, it gives me a reason to shop (even if it is just for glue sticks and erasers).
Another one of my favorite parts of back to school shopping is the buying of a fresh, new pair of tennis shoes for each of my girls. (Okay, this is getting even sadder you are probably thinking.)However, shoe shopping is not something we do very often in our house. I guess I am not your typical girl because I don't get into shoes like most girls. When I was a little girl, shoe shopping was usually, mainly reserved for getting ready for a new school year or Easter, so I get excited about taking my girls. This week I took advantage of Shoe Carnival's buy one get one half off sale, and I let Abby and Hallie each pick out a pair of Nikes. I like for them to have a pair of very sturdy shoes because they pretty much wear them everyday to school. I figure it is pointless to send them to school at this age in just flimsy but cute shoes because they are just going to be running around on the playground at recess anyway. AND the playground dust at our school turns shoes and clothes a rusty orange, so even the cutest shoes will be ruined by that dust!

I do not think you are a nerd at all! I always loved the beginning of school for the same reasons...new school supplies and new clothes! I think you are very smart for shopping ahead of time to keep from having the huge expense all at one time. I am so excited that we will have two of your sweet girls with us at ALS this year! ReplyDeletei too do not think you are a nerd. it's funny that you posted this because kekoa and i just got home from walmart where i bought him a new lunch box and a new pair of shoes! ha! i already put his wipes, paper towels, kleenex, and bibsters in a box ready to take to open house. i also bought him a new plastic sandwich holder which is blue with dinosaurs on it. i'm trying to teach him how to eat pieces of sandwich out of it like a big boy but of course he just wants to pick it up and toss it! love this post! this IS a fun time of the year!
ReplyDeleteI love the beginning of school. Everything is fresh and new. You can feel the possibilities. The PTO at my girls' school sells preboxed sets of school supplies (through Target, I think) toward the end of each school year (for the next school year), so we were able to buy our school supplies months ago. I'm so glad I won't have to fight the crowds at Wal-Mart. I don't like waiting til the last minute, either. Now if I can just get my own classroom ready in time...
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your blog. I couldn't identify more with your enthusiasm for school supplies. I too, have become VERY practical, and fully identify with what you said about shopping. Love the pics of the girls! I really can't believe they can be as grown up as they are! I hope they enjoy the last few weeks of summer! Love you!! SO great to see you last Sunday!
